Du Ponceau, Peter Stephen

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Du Ponceau, Peter Stephen (1760–1844)

French-born American lawyer, philologist, and author. He was secretary to Baron von Steuben, later becoming a captain and von Steuben's aide-de-camp. He practised international law in Philadelphia and published works on a variety of legal, historical, and linguistic subjects.

He was born at Saint Martin, Ile de Ré, France, trained for the French priesthood, but decided it was not his vocation. After his time with von Steuben, he became under secretary of foreign affairs. His command of European languages plus his cosmopolitan background soon made him much in demand in the field of international law. He became particularly well known for his studies of American Indian languages.
