Du Puy, (Jean Baptiste) Edouard (1770-1822)

Swiss baritone, violinist, pianist, and composer. He studied piano with Dussek in Paris and became a member of the orchestra of Prince Henry of Prussia at Rheinsberg in 1785 and its leader in 1787. In 1793 he settled at Stockholm, but was expelled in 1799; he then went to sing in opera at Copenhagen, where he taught singing to the wife of the future Christian VIII. He had a love affair with her, and they were exiled in 1809. In 1811 he returned to Stockholm and became court conductor and professor.

Works

operas Ungdom og Galskab (a Danish version of the libretto of Méhul's Une Folie, 1806) and Felicie (1821); several ballets; funeral music for Charles XIII, etc.
