Duane, William

Duane, William (1760–1835)

US journalist. He joined Benjamin Franklin Bache's anti-Federalist Aurora, which he edited 1798–1822. Tried and acquitted of sedition in 1799, he was charged a second time, but the charges were dropped after Thomas Jefferson's election in 1800.

He was born near Lake Champlain, New York. He lived in Ireland, where he learned printing, and in India, where he founded an outspoken paper that led to his deportation.

Duane, William (1872–1935)

US physicist. He taught at Harvard and the University of Colorado, then became a researcher at the Curie Radium Laboratory, Paris, before returning to Harvard. A pioneer in biophysics, he made major contributions to the use of X-rays in treating cancer.

He was born in Philadelphia.
