Dubois, Guillaume (1656–1723)

French cardinal and statesman. He had great influence over the Duke of Orléans, regent for Louis XV, and reversed Louis XIV's policy of friendship with Spain and negotiated the Triple Alliance of 1717 and Quadruple Alliance of 1718. He became archbishop of Cambrai in 1719 and cardinal in 1721.

Dubois tutored the young Duke of Orléans and arranged his marriage in 1692 to Mademoiselle de Blois, the legitimized daughter of Louis XIV. After serving as an ambassador in London, he became secretary to his former pupil in 1701 and councillor of state in 1715.
