Muscle-producing stem cells injected into dogs with the equivalent of Duchenne muscular dystrophy significantly slowed the disease's progression, researchers report. Establishing the gender of the foetus will rule out the need for more invasive tests for women who are known to be carriers of gender-linked diseases such as haemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which only affect boys. Because these findings parallel those in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the study of muscle injury--its mechanisms, management, and repair--likely will provide important insights into the mechanisms underlying many of the MDs. |
