Duffy, Clinton T (1898-1982)

US penologist. The son of a San Quentin guard, he was raised within the prison and became a warden. He abolished airless cells and physical punishment, fired guards for cruelty, and introduced a prison newspaper, cafeteria, and night school.

He was actually born in San Quentin Prison, San Francisco and was the inspiration for the film Duffy of San Quentin (1954). Known for his humanitarian reforms, he campaigned ceaselessly against the death penalty. Author of several books, his work was widely imitated by other penologists.
