Dugway

Town in Tooele County, northwest Utah; population (1990) 1,800. It is situated in the Great Salt Lake Desert, 58 km/36 mi southwest of Tooele and 100 km/62 mi southwest of Salt Lake City. It stands at the east edge of the large Dugway Proving Grounds, an Army installation used to test chemical and biological weapons. In 1968 the base was alleged to have released nerve gas, killing 6,500 sheep on neighbouring ranches; the Army denied the charge, but compensated ranchers. ‘Dugway’ is a term Mormon settlers used for a wagon road created by digging ruts into the side of a mountain.
