Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Dujardin, Karel (1622–1678)

Dutch painter and etcher. He painted landscape, portrait, and genre scenes. He was the pupil of Nicolaes Berchem, whom he resembles in Italianate landscape. His baroque style can be seen in religious works such as St Paul 1662 (National Gallery, London).

As a young man in Rome, Dujardin painted genre scenes; around 1654–55 the influence of Paulus Potter turned him to animal studies. Later he reverted to Italian themes under the influence of Adriaen van de Velde. He visited Italy twice, 1642–62 and 1674–78, and died in Venice.
