Duke, James Buchanan (1856-1925)

US businessman and philanthropist. He began growing tobacco and turned to manufacturing cigarettes. He formed the American Tobacco Company and also founded the Southern Power Company to develop hydroelectric power. He donated his fortune to various charitable and educational institutions.

He was born near Durham, North Carolina. His American Tobacco Company competed with the British Imperial Tobacco Company. A large part of the money he donated went to Trinity College, North Carolina, which was re-named Duke University.
