Dukes, Ashley (1885–1959)

English dramatist and theatre manager. Among his plays are The Man with a Load of Mischief (1924), a Regency conversation piece, and two adaptations from German, Such Men are Dangerous (1928), from Der Patriot by Alfred Neumann (1895–1952), and Jew Süss (1929), from the novel by Lion Feuchtwanger. In 1933 he opened the Mercury Theatre, Notting Hill Gate, London, for the production of new and foreign plays.

His books include Modern Dramatists 1911 and The Youngest Drama 1924. In 1937 he was appointed professor of drama of the Royal Society of Literature.
