Dukes County

County in southeast Massachusetts; area 264 sq km/102 sq mi; population (1998 est) 13,600. It comprises the island of Martha's Vineyard, the Elizabeth Islands, and other islands off Cape Cod. Its administrative headquarters is Edgartown. Dukes depends on tourism and summer residents for its economic well-being; it consists primarily of summer resorts and beach communities.
