Duluth

City and port in northeastern Minnesota, USA, at the western end of Lake Superior on the mouth of the St Louis River; seat of St Louis County; population (2000) 86,900. With its neighbouring city, Superior (Wisconsin), it shares a harbour at the head of navigation on the Great Lakes system. The westernmost port on the St Lawrence Seaway, Duluth trades in iron ore, grain, coal, oil, and timber; it also manufactures steel, flour, timber, and dairy produce, and tourism is important.

The community was founded as a fur-trading post in 1672 and permanent settlement began in 1852. Duluth is the seat of several colleges including the College of St Scholastica (1912) and the University of Minnesota at Duluth (1947); it is also home to a symphony orchestra.
