Dumont, Margaret

Dumont, Margaret (1889–1965)

US movie actor. She appeared in seven Marx Brothers movies, appearing as the classic ‘straight’ foil to their antics. She also appeared in several film comedies of W C Fields, Laurel and Hardy, and Jack Benny.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York and began her career as a singer. She became a regular player with the Marx Brothers in stage comedies of the 1920s. Her seven Marx Brothers films include The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), and Duck Soup (1933). Her last movie was What a Way to Go! (1964) and she appeared with Groucho Marx in a television sketch just a few weeks before her death.
