Dunbar, Earl of

    0.03 sec.

Dunbar, Earl of

Scottish title dating from the 11th century. The 12th Earl was deprived of his title and estates by James I of Scotland in 1434, but the title was revived in 1605 in favour of George, third son of Alexander Home of Manderston. On his death the title became extinct 1611.

Cospatric, Earl of Northumberland until 1072, was created 1st Earl of Dunbar by King Malcolm III of Scotland and in 1072 received from him the grant of the town of Dunbar with the surrounding lands of Lothian. Patrick, 10th Earl (1284–1368), sheltered Edward II in 1314 after the Battle of Bannockburn at Dunbar Castle. He married Black Agnes, whose brother led the centre of the Scottish forces at that battle.
