Phyfe, Duncan (c. 1768–1854)

Scottish-born US furnituremaker. Establishing his own workshop in New York City 1792, he gained a national reputation. Although derived from earlier English and Greco-Roman designs, the Phyfe style was distinctive in its simplicity of line with elaborate ornamentation and carving. In 1837 he reorganized his firm as Duncan Phyfe and Sons.

Born in Scotland, Phyfe emigrated to America with his family 1784. He settled in Albany, New York, and learned the cabinetmaker's trade. He remained active until his retirement in 1847.
