DunfermlineIndustrial town north of the Firth of Forth in Fife, Scotland; population (2001) 39,200. Industries include engineering, electronics, and textiles. It was the ancient capital of Scotland, with many sites of royal historical significance. Many Scottish kings, including Robert the Bruce, Malcolm Canmore and his queen Margaret, and Elizabeth I, are buried in Dunfermline Abbey. Dunfermline is the birthplace of the industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who presented the city with Pittencrieff Park (‘the Glen’), a free library, and an annual income of £25,000. A royal ‘square mile’ includes a royal palace, 12th-century Dumfermline Abbey, and a royal burial site.
