Dungiven

Market town in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland; population (2001, Dungiven and Upper Glenshane) 4,150. It is surrounded by a mountain glen, and the river scenery is impressive. It is an angling centre and a base for climbing the Sperrin Mountains. Near the town are the remains of an Augustinian priory founded in 1100. Quartz crystals known as Dungiven diamonds are found nearby.

Dungiven was the stronghold of the O'Cahans. The lands were granted by James I to the London Company of Skinners during the time of English settler plantation. Near the town are the ruins of a fortified mansion, Dungiven Bawn, built for the Skinners' Company in 1618. The Roe Valley country park is also nearby.
