Dunglison, Robley

Dunglison, Robley (1798–1869)

English-born US physiologist, medical educator, and author. After he had made a reputation in medical circles in Europe, he held several prestigious university teaching posts. His books include Human Physiology (1832) and A New Dictionary of Medical Science and Literature (1833).

He was born in Keswick. It was President Thomas Jefferson who initially invited him to go to the USA to teach, first at the University of Virginia. He later went to the University of Maryland and then joined the faculty of the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.
