Dunne, Finley Peter

Dunne, Finley Peter (1867–1936)

US humorist and social critic. His fictional character ‘Mr Dooley’, the Irish saloonkeeper and sage, gained a national readership. Written in dialect, Mr Dooley's humorous yet pointed reflections on US politics and society appeared 1892–1915. From 1900 the ‘Mr Dooley columns’ appeared in such national magazines as Collier's and Metropolitan.

Born in Chicago, Dunne wrote humour pieces for local newspapers before becoming editor-in-chief of the Chicago Journal 1897.
