Dunstaffnage

Ruined castle in Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, on Loch Etive, 4 km/2.5 mi northeast of Oban. It is traditionally believed to be the royal seat of the ancient Dalriadan kings of Scotland, and held the Stone of Destiny (the Scottish throne) before its removal to Scone. Dunstaffnage was captured by Robert (I) the Bruce in 1308, and became the stronghold of the Campbells and Macdougals.

During the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745 it formed an English military station. Flora Macdonald, the Scottish heroine who rescued Prince Charles Edward Stuart, was imprisoned in the fortress in 1746.

The Duke of Argyll is the hereditary keeper of the castle; Campbell of Dunstaffnage is the hereditary captain.
