Dunure

Fishing village in South Ayrshire unitary authority, Scotland, 10 km/6 mi south of Ayr; population (2001) 470. It has become a tourist venue, with visitors attracted by its coastal location and the ruins of Dunure Castle.

Visitors are also attracted by the ‘electric’ brae: a bizarre optical illusion that makes the top of a hill in the surrounding landscape appear as if it is the bottom. The lie of the land makes it seem as if one is driving downhill, but if an attempt is made to park on the hill with the handbrake off, the car will slowly run backwards, apparently up the hill, against all logic.
