Dunwoody, (Thomas) Richard (1964- )

Northern Irish jockey. He was British National Hunt champion jockey three seasons in a row, 1992/93-94/95. During his career he rode a hundred winners or more for a record ten successive seasons between 1989/90 and 1998/99. He won all the leading races including the Grand National in 1986 and 1994, the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1988, and the Champion Hurdle in 1990. In April 1999, at Wincanton, England, he broke Peter Scudamore's world record of 1,678 National Hunt winners. His career total of National Hunt winners was 1,699. In December 1999 he retired as a jockey on medical advice, having sustained a neck injury the previous year which was worsened by further falls.

Born in County Down, he rode his first winner in 1983. He was runner-up to Scudamore as champion jockey in three consecutive seasons, 1989/90-1991/92, before landing the title for the first time in 1992/3. He rode his 1,000th winner in 1994 and in 1995 followed Scudamore in surpassing John Francome's career total of 1,138 winners.
