Dupanloup, Felix Antoine Philbert

    0.10 sec.

Dupanloup, Felix Antoine Philbert (1802–1878)

French cleric and writer. Dupanloup was the Bishop of Orléans from 1849 until his death, and wrote many influential works on religious education.

Although Dupanloup staunchly defended the temporal power of the popes, at the Vatican Council of 1870, he was a prominent opponent of its definition of papal infallibility.

Dupanloup was born at St Félix, near Chambéry, Savoy. Ordained a priest in 1825, he was for a time tutor to the Orléans princes. Later he founded a religious academy at St Hyacinthe. His educational works include Methode général de catéchisme 1841, De l'Education, 1850, and L'Enfant, 1869. He was also the author of several books on ecclesiastical and religious subjects.
