Durance

River in southeast France; length 305 km/190 mi. It rises in the département of Hautes-Alpes, and flows southwest past Briançon in a series of gorges. In its lower reaches it is canalized for irrigation purposes, and its course becomes northwesterly. It finally enters the River Rhône 5 km/3 mi below Avignon. Its chief tributary is the River Verdon.
