Durazno

Capital of Durazno department in Uruguay, located on the River Yí, 170 km/106 mi north of Montevideo; population (2004) 33,600. Durazno is sited at an important road and railway junction, and has dairying, flour-milling, and meat-packing industries.

Department in central Uruguay; area 11,643 sq km/4,495 sq mi; population (1996) 55,037. The region is crossed by the Cuchilla Grande del Durazno, a ridge of low hills. Vast numbers of sheep and cattle are pastured in the department. Wheat and other cereal crops are also widely grown. The capital is Durazno, where there is a railway and airfield.
