Durocher, Leo (Ernest)

    0.03 sec.

Durocher, Leo (Ernest) (1905-1991)

US baseball player and manager. He played in two World Series and was an integral member of the St Louis Cardinals' ‘Gas House’ teams. He managed the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros 1939-73.

He was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts and played as a major league shortstop for 17 seasons (1925-45). He was forced to sit out the 1947 season because of ‘conduct detrimental to baseball’. His irascible style of managing earned him the nickname, ‘The Lip’, and he inspired his teams to three league championships and a World Series victory in 1954. Among his many unprintable words, his most often quoted - ‘Nice guys finish last!’ - were probably never spoken by him. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
