Duryea, J(ames) Frank (1869-1967)

US inventor. Together with his brother Charles Duryea he designed an early car, but it is Frank alone who is generally credited with producing the USA's first petrol-driven car. Its trial run was in 1893. He went on to produced the luxury Stevens-Duryea car.

He was born in Washburn, Illinois. He and his brother grew up with an interest in mechanics, and it was when Frank worked over his brother's engine design that the first of many conflicts between them broke out.
