Schleswig

Seaport in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, at the western end of the 35 km/22 mi long Schlei inlet of the Baltic and 50 km/31 mi northwest of Kiel; population (2005 est) 24,100; Schleswig-Flensburg rural district 199,700. The city has food industries and is a tourist centre. Schleswig's cathedral dates partly from the 11th century.

Schleswig became a bishopric in the 10th century and until 1721 was a ducal residence. There is a massive palace (now a museum) on an island in the Schlei.
