Dutoit, Charles (1936– )

Swiss conductor. He studied at the Lausanne Conservatory and at Tanglewood. He made his debut with the Berne Symphony Orchestra in 1964, and was its chief conductor 1966–77. He was guest conductor with the Suisse Romande and Zurich Tonhalle Orchestras and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. He was musical director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 1977, giving many performances of Haydn, Stravinsky, and Debussy. The second of his three wives was the pianist Martha Argerich. He released a recording of Berlioz's Les Troyens/The Trojans in 1994.
