Duvalier, Jean-Claude

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Duvalier, Jean-Claude (1951– )

Right-wing president of Haiti 1971–86. Known as Baby Doc, he succeeded his father François Duvalier, becoming, at the age of 19, the youngest president in the world. He continued to receive support from the USA but was pressured into moderating some elements of his father's regime, yet still tolerated no opposition. In 1986, with Haiti's economy stagnating and with increasing civil disorder, Duvalier fled to France, taking much of the Haitian treasury with him.
