Dwarka

Coastal town in Gujarat state, western India; population (1991) 27,800. Dwarka is one of Hinduism's most sacred pilgrimage sites, being one of the four Holy Abodes as well as one of the seven Holy Places. Krishna set up his capital here after fleeing from Mathura.

The temple of Dwarkanath (one of Krishna's titles) is believed by many Hindus to have been built in one night. Although much of the temple dates from the 12th century or later, some believe that the inner sanctum is 2,500 years old.
