Dyer, Reginald Edward Harry

Dyer, Reginald Edward Harry (1864-1927)

British general. He was responsible for the Amritsar Massacre in Punjab, India, in 1919. A subsequent inquiry led to his resignation.

Dyer was born in India and studied in Ireland. He was commissioned in the Queen's Regiment in 1885 and served in the Burma Campaign of 1886-87 and the Zakka Khel expedition of 1908. In World War I he commanded the 45th infantry brigade on the East Persia border. As brigade commander at Jalandhar when riots broke out in the Punjab, he was sent by the viceroy of India to put down the riots in Amritsar, where mobs had killed Europeans.
