Unitary authority in central Scotland, created in 1996 from two districts of Strathclyde region.

Area

175 sq km/67 sq mi.

Towns

Kirkintilloch (administrative headquarters), Bearsden, Milngavie

Physical

low-lying lands to the south give way dramatically to the Campsie Fells in the north; Earl's Seat (578 m/1,896 ft); River Kelvin

Features

Forth and Clyde Canal; Antonine Wall

Population

(2001) 108,250

Economy

The area is an affluent commuter belt for the city of Glasgow. There are also smaller industrialized villages, such as Croy, in the area.

Environment

There are several Sites of Special Scientific Interest and one country park.

Administrative history

The districts

of Bearsden and Milngavie, and Strathkelvin were merged into East Dunbartonshire in 1996. Prior to 1975 the area was part of the county of Dunbartonshire.
