There is a sharp contrast between the eastern affluent commuter zone, which is bound into Glasgow's economy, and the de-industrializing Barrhead area. The agricultural lands in the south are of marginal capability.

Administrative history

Prior to 1975, the area was part of the county of Renfrewshire.
