British submarine class begun 1911, some 23 vessels being built. E-class submarines saw extensive service in World War I: E11 and E14 entered the Sea of Marmora 1915 beneath Turkish minefields and sank several Turkish and German ships, while E15 was sunk attempting to run through the Dardanelles April 1915.
