Eagle Pass

Town and administrative headquarters of Maverick County, southwest Texas; population (2000) 22,400. It is situated on the Rio Grande opposite Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, and 210 km/130 mi southwest of San Antonio. A port of entry, the town relies heavily on international trade and tourism; fishing and hunting are popular. Natural gas and oil production and farming and ranching are important in the area, along with mineral extraction, particularly of fluorite and baryte.
