Eagleburger, Lawrence S(idney) (1930– )

US Republican government official. He spent his career in the foreign service and the State Department and briefly acted as secretary of state in 1992, having been deputy from 1989.

Eagleburger entered the foreign service 1957. He became assistant to the national security adviser Henry Kissinger 1968 and an executive assistant to Kissinger when the latter became secretary of state 1973. Having been ambassador to Yugoslavia 1977–81, Eagleburger became assistant secretary for European affairs in the State Department 1981, and undersecretary for political affairs 1982–84. He supported President Reagan's funding of the Contra rebels fighting to overthrow the government of Nicaragua. From 1984 to 1989 he worked for Kissinger Associates.
