Eaker, Ira Clarence

    0.04 sec.

Eaker, Ira Clarence (1898-1971)

US air force general of World War II. He commanded the US 8th Air Force Bomber Command, based in the UK from the end of 1942, and drew up plans for the Allied Combined Bomber Offensive, prioritizing targets for both the USAAF and RAF. He commanded the air support for Operation Dragoon, the landings in southern France 1944, and then moved his force over to French airfields to give support to the Allied armies.

A strong believer in precision daylight bombing, he was initially over-optimistic about the ability of his bomber force to penetrate Germany in daylight and was forced to modify his tactics in the face of the German defences.
