Eales, John Anthony (1970– )| Australian rugby union player. Born in Queensland, he rose to prominence in 1991 as a member of Australia's World Cup-winning side. A talented line-jumper, he brought a new dimension to second row play with his athleticism and all-round ball skills. He was also a talented goalkicker, kicking 164 points in international rugby. He was appointed Australian captain in 1996 and in 1998 became his country's most capped forward when he overtook Simon Poidevin's total of 59 international appearances. He captained Australia to victory in the 1999 World Cup when he and fellow Australian Tim Horan became the first players to win two World Cup winners' medals. He retired in September 2001 having captained his country a record 52 times. |
