Griqualand East

Area of Eastern Cape province, South Africa, lying to the south of KwaZulu Natal and immediately southeast of the Drakensberg Mountains; area of over 19,000 sq km/7,336 sq mi. The chief town is Kokstad.

The area was previously a district of Transkei. Adam Kok, chief of the Griqua Bushmen, originally settled in the area in 1862, bringing with him 15,000 Griquas in a trek over the Drakensberg during which the Griquas were constantly attacked by Basutos.
