East Hartford

Town in Hartford County, central Connecticut; population (1990) 50,500. It is situated on the Hockanum River and lies across the Connecticut River from Hartford. East Hartford, which includes the towns of Hockanum and Burnside, is heavily industrial; manufactures include jet engines, firearms, steel, paper, stamp and die plates, and candy.

Originally called Podunk by local tribes, it was settled in 1639. It separated from Hartford in 1783, by which time it was already producing iron, gunpowder, and hats.
