East Lansing

Town in Ingham County, south-central Michigan; population (1990) 50,700. It is situated on the Red Cedar River, next to Lansing. The site was settled in 1849, but it remained relatively isolated until Michigan Agricultural College was founded here in 1855. The first state agricultural college in the USA, it later became Michigan State University; town life continues to centre on the university. Livestock, grain, and sugar beets are raised in the area.
