East Liverpool

Town in Columbiana County, east Ohio; population (2000) 13,100. It is situated on the Ohio River, 53 km/33 mi south of Youngstown. It was founded in 1795 by Thomas Fawcett, an Irish Quaker. Extensive local clay deposits made the city a ceramics centre by 1839. Although the industry declined in the 1930s, the manufacture of ceramic products remains East Liverpool's economic mainstay.
