East London
| River port and resort on the southeast coast of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, at the mouth of the Buffalo River, 915 km/568 mi by sea from Cape Town, and 405 km/252 mi from Durban; population (2001) 597,000. Founded in 1846 as Port Rex, its name was changed to East London in 1848. It has a good harbour, with exports including wool, grain, copper, citrus fruits, pineapples, chilled meat, and dairy produce. Industries include textiles, brewing, engineering, motor vehicle assembly, and chemical processing. |
| East London is the terminus of a railway from the interior. The harbour handles over 1 million tonnes of cargo per year. Bulk petrol and fuel-oil tanks are situated near the harbour, which was considerably enlarged in the early 1960s. It is a popular seaside resort. |
