East London

River port and resort on the southeast coast of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, at the mouth of the Buffalo River, 915 km/568 mi by sea from Cape Town, and 405 km/252 mi from Durban; population (2001) 597,000. Founded in 1846 as Port Rex, its name was changed to East London in 1848. It has a good harbour, with exports including wool, grain, copper, citrus fruits, pineapples, chilled meat, and dairy produce. Industries include textiles, brewing, engineering, motor vehicle assembly, and chemical processing.

East London is the terminus of a railway from the interior. The harbour handles over 1 million tonnes of cargo per year. Bulk petrol and fuel-oil tanks are situated near the harbour, which was considerably enlarged in the early 1960s. It is a popular seaside resort.
