East Orange

East Orange

City in Essex County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 73,600. It is 20 km/12 mi west of New York City and adjoins Newark to the northwest. It is primarily a residential, working-class area. The manufacture of electrical pumps, swimming pool equipment, hydrants, plastics, and audio-visual equipment is important to the local economy. There are also a large number of insurance companies based in the city. It was settled in 1666, and was originally part of Orange, from which it separated in 1863. East Orange is home to Upsala College (1893) and a large veterans' hospital.
