Britain subdivided India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan (now, Bangladesh, meaning East Bengal) only at independence in 1947, to avert civil war.
Patriarch George Khan (the great Indian actor Om Puri) left East Pakistan before there was an East Pakistan, settled in Britain and married the very English Ella (Linda Bassett).
Since the 1971 war between India and Pakistan (in which East Pakistan became Bangladesh), there has been a clear desire on the part of some Pakistani army officials to "dismember" India.
