East Peoria

Town in Tazewell County, north-central Illinois; population (1990) 21,400. It is situated on the Illinois River, opposite Peoria. The economy of this industrial suburb is dominated by its Caterpillar tractor plant. It is home to Illinois Central College (1966). To the southwest, along the river, is Fort Crevecoeur State Park, where, in 1680, René La Salle built the first French fort in Illinois.
