East Providence

East Providence

Town in Providence County, east Rhode Island; population (1990) 50,400. It is situated on the east shore of the Seekonk River and Providence River, opposite Providence. East Providence has petroleum storage facilities, trucking terminals, and a printing industry. Chemicals, jewellery, machinery, fabricated metals, electronics, and plastics are all manufactured here.

Founded in 1636 by the colonist Roger Williams, it was part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, until 1812, when it became part of Seekonk. West Seekonk was set off and became the Rhode Island town of East Providence in 1862. East Providence includes the former town of Rumford, and which was noted for its production of chemicals, including baking powder.
