East Rockaway

Community in Hempstead town, Nassau County, southeast New York; population (1990) 10,200. It is situated 32 km/20 mi east-southeast of Manhattan. Now a residential suburb and resort, it was founded in the 1680s near a gristmill, which is now a museum featuring American Indian and shipping memorabilia.
