East St Louis

East St Louis

City in southwestern Illinois, USA, on the Mississippi River, opposite St Louis, Missouri; population (2000) 31,500. It is a centre for the processing of livestock; other industries include oil refining, glass, aluminium, steel, paint materials, and machinery.

East St Louis started as a ferry station in 1797, and was incorporated with the nearby town of Illinoistown in 1861.
